Latino spin on Children’s Day will emphasize child literacy for all backgrounds
HENDERSON, Nev. – Celebrating children, family and reading, Henderson Libraries will host El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day), a day of fun family activities for all ages, from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, at Paseo Verde Library, located at 280 S. Green Valley Parkway in Henderson
The celebration will feature a variety of activities that will emphasize the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
“Literacy is a fundamental skill for children and adults alike, and introducing children to books at an early age is vital to ensuring they have the right tools to succeed in life, ” said Florica Hagendorn, children’s senior youth services specialist at Paseo Verde Library. “This event is a unique opportunity for families to enjoy the diversity of our local area through their public library.”
The event is part of a national library activity called El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day). El Día is an enhancement of Children’s Day, which took hold in 1925 following the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Genenva, Switzerland. Countries selected their own day for the celebration, with Mexico and many other Latin American countries choosing the end of April. The American Library Association formalized the celebration in 2001, and since then, hundreds of libraries across the country take part each year.
For this year’s event, Henderson Libraries has prepared an enjoyable family lineup of activities and entertainment, including children’s crafts throughout the afternoon, two children’s puppet shows, Mariachi music, and several dance performances by Ballet Folklórico Xyachimal, a ballet that interprets Mexican culture through traditional folklore dance.
