Henderson Libraries presents travel photography contest

Summer Reading Program encourages readers to step behind the lens

HENDERSON, Nev.Henderson Libraries’ Summer Reading Program is putting “a picture is worth 1,000 words” to the test with a photography contest and classes at library locations this summer. The theme of the contest, “Novel Destinations,” encourages amateur shutterbugs to submit photos of their travels abroad and at home, which will be accepted at all six Henderson Libraries locations June 13 through Aug. 27. Best in Show, First-, second- and third-place winners will be announced at an award ceremony and reception Thursday, September 8 at the Green Valley Library.

A Best in Show contest prize, sponsored by Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop will be awarded to the Best in Show winner for ages 11 and under category.  A Best in Show prize sponsored by Super Mex Restaurant and Cantina will be awarded to the Best in Show winner for the ages 12 and up category. All prints will be judged by three judges. First, second, third and honorable mention ribbons will also be awarded.  Photos submitted will be on display at the Green Valley Library for the month of September and on the website in the Digital Collections section located at: http://digitalcollections.mypubliclibrary.com/. Winners will be contacted Monday, Sept. 5.

Only one entry per library card will be accepted.  The photo submission must accompany the signed entry form which is available at all the library locations. 

All photographs must be submitted as a physical print or a copy of the print.  Color and black and white photographs must be submitted as a print or a copy on photo paper at an 8×10-inch size or smaller, and must be mounted on rigid stock such as foam core or mount board. No loose prints will be accepted and no plastic or glass covering the print will be permitted. A digital copy may also be submitted along with the print submission. The digital copy will allow the image to be viewed on the Henderson Libraries’ Digital Website.  The digital file should be either a .jpg or .tif file and less than 10MB in size.

The contest chairs reserve the right to disqualify any entry that does not conform to the rules or is inappropriate for public display due to nudity or vulgarity. 

To prepare for submission to the contest, two free photography classes are available at various locations.

 The Nevada Camera Club will present a free two-hour introduction to photography and essentials class (for all ages) at:

  • 3 p.m. Saturday, June 11 at theGreenValleyLibrary;
  • 3:45 p.m. Thursday, July 14 at theLydiaMalcolm Library;
  • 1 p.m. Saturday, July 23 at the Paseo Verde Library;
  • 3 p.m. Aug. 3 at the James I. Gibson Library.

Although the photography classes are free, registration is required. For additional information about these workshops, call the library location hosting each class.
