Henderson Chamber of Commerce breakfast to focus on health care

Dean of School of Medicine to discuss public medical education Nov. 19

thomas-l-schwenk-mdHENDERSON, Nev. – Dr. Thomas Schwenk, dean of the University of Nevada School of Medicine, will discuss “Public Medical Education in Southern Nevada: Fantasy or Reality?” during the Henderson Chamber of Commerce’s network breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the Wingate by Wyndam, 3041 St. Rose Parkway in Henderson.

Schwenk will talk about where health care is heading in Nevada and how the School of Medicine is serving the state has taken on new and critical importance as it faces new challenges. He also will address the current status and future plans of the School of Medicine as it relates to Las Vegas.

Schwenk earned his medical doctorate degree from the University of Michigan and trained in family medicine at the University of Utah. He practiced for several years in Park City, Utah before returning to his alma mater in Michigan to serve as the chair of the department of family medicine from 1986 to 2011. Board certified in family and sports medicine, Schwenk served as a member of the board of directors for the American Board of Family Medicine and as the organization’s vice president from 2004 to 2005. He was elected to the prestigious Institute of Medicine in 2002, and currently is the only member in the University of Nevada system. In Nevada, he’s served as the dean of the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Reno and vice president of the University of Nevada, Reno’s division of health sciences for more than two years.

The cost to attend the network breakfast is $20 for members, $40 for non-members. There is an additional $10 charge for walk-ins who do not reserve their space prior to the registration deadline on Friday, Nov. 15.
