Henderson Chamber hosts I CAN BE events at Foothill, Silverado

Feb. 12, March 14 events help high school freshmen plan for their futures

HENDERSON, Nev. – The Henderson Chamber of Commerce will host the I CAN BE program, a one-day event geared to help local freshmen better plan for their future and achieve their goals.

This year the program will take place at two high schools, at Foothill High School, 800 College Drive, Wednesday, Feb. 12, and at Silverado High School, 1650 Silver Hawk Ave., Friday, March 14. The program is set to take place from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days.

The event is free for students, who will learn which high school courses best suit their long-term, professional goals. Chamber members from the business community also will volunteer their time to speak and mentor approximately 800 participants during each event.

Students will be split into 16 areas of interest including agriculture, food and natural resources; architecture and construction; arts, a/v technology and communications; business management and administration; education and training; finance; government and public administration; health science; hospitality and tourism; human services; information technology; law, public safety, corrections and security; manufacturing; marketing; science, technology, engineering and mathematics; and transportation, distribution and logistics.

Three to four volunteers will lead each group to give students one-on-one attention and mentorship.

“Planning for the future is always a way the business community can remain fresh and viable,” said Scott Muelrath, president and CEO for the Henderson Chamber of Commerce. “Partnering with our local high schools gives us a ground-floor look at the future, the chance to guide students in the right direction and the avenue to use our expertise for education.”

Event sponsors include Nevada State Bank, NV Energy and TRONOX.
