Galleria Drive Interchange on I-95 creates easier access to the Galleria at Sunset just in time for holiday season

Second front entrance established when interchange opens Nov. 4, 2009

HENDERSON, Nev. – The Galleria at Sunset is already Henderson’s one-stop shop for everything from trendy clothing to electronics, but the opening of the Galleria Drive Interchange on I-95 makes reaching the mall as convenient as the wide variety of stores offered.

The City of Henderson, along with the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) completed and will open the new Galleria Drive Interchange at I-95, just past Sunset Road Wednesday, Nov. 4.

City of Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen, NDOT Deputy Director Scott Rawlins and RTC General Manager Jacob Snow joined members of community in a ceremony celebrating the interchange’s opening with a ceremony Tuesday, Nov. 3. The interchange was designed to alleviate traffic demands on the Russell Road and Sunset Road exits while providing enhanced freeway access and improved local roadways.

At a cost of $66 million, the Galleria Drive Interchange took nearly 18 months to complete.

“Traffic on Sunset Road is always congested, so with the opening of the Galleria Drive Interchange, much of that traffic can disperse making reaching the mall much easier – something I know our mall patrons will appreciate as the holiday season is just around the corner,” said Scott Muelrath, general manager for the Galleria at Sunset.

The Galleria Drive Interchange will not only create a second main entrance to the mall and ease traffic congestion on Sunset Road, but it will also provide additional exposure and traffic to the new Kohl’s department store and the JCPenney located on the north side of the center. Traffic will also flow easier to the food court area on the north side of the mall since it will be more accessible.

The Galleria at Sunset opened in 1996 and is anchored by Macy’s, JCPenney, Dillard’s, Kohl’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods. It features premiere retailers such as Coach, bebe, Build-A-Bear Workshop, Gymboree, Buckle, Abercrombie & Fitch, Victoria’s Secret, Brookstone and more and is also home to the Galleria Library. Owned and operated by Forest City Enterprises, the 1,051,000-square-foot complex is the only enclosed mall in Henderson – one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. In addition to retail, the Galleria at Sunset boasts two full service and 12 fast food restaurants.
